Watching movies on your E71? Why not!

Paused DivX movie on E71Weekend has just started, so maybe it is time for more entertaining post? What do you do with your phone while travelling by train, bus or subway? You might listen to the radio (not probable underground, as long as it is not Internet Radio :) ) or mp3 player. You may browse the Web, but E71, as many other S60 devices, allows watching movies too! I’m not talking about short video clips from YouTube, but real movies from your DVD collection.
A friend of mine having Nokia N95 encouraged me last week to try mobile DivX player. On his way to work Michal watches on the phone some of his favorite movies, not seen for years. What do you need to do to enjoy watching movies as well? Where can you find a player?
The answer is very simple, as in case of PC codecs, go to www.divx.com and look for a mobile player. DivX organization informs now that some of phones available on the market are officially”DivX certified”. Mostly those are Windows Mobile smartphones and fortunately you Paused DivX movie on E71don’t need one to watch some movies. DivX player is available for Symbian-based phones as well. Simply install the player on your mobile and that is really all you need to do. The player is able to play back a movie file, coded with DivX codec, without any additional conversion needed. The player has simple UI allowing to pause the movie and move fast forward or backward to find a specific moment of the movie. It also asks if you want to proceed with watching movie since last viewed moment. The only disadvantage is that PC formatted movies uses about 700MB of memory, so it is comfortable to have for example 8GB big memory card inside your phone. I really enjoyed playing with DivX on my E71 this week.
You might ask “what about build-in Real Player”? Good point! The player present in E71 by default requires movies to be converted to a mobile movie format like “.3GP”. It is possible to convert a source file in AVI or DVD format into 3GP using free software called ABC 3GP Converter. The advantage is that you save some space on your memory card with this action. Additionally before conversion you can define the number of FPS, output resolution and sound quality to adjust it to phone capabilities. Unfortunately the conversion process takes some time. Moreover my personal experience with Real Player says it is not very stable, causing phone crashes sometimes. There is no worse thing in the middle of Lost episode right?
DivX player on E71[Update]: First of all I think Sebastian asked in comments very important question. Indeed video playback is quite power consuming, but from my observation it should be to display whole 2-hrs long movie without recharging.
I wanted to share with you also some observations about watching longer files. It happened unfortunately that the phone has problems with some of vidoe files. After several minutes of playback the sound and video are annoyingly desynchronized, which looks like CPU issue. It looks that this might have its root in codeing used for creating the file. I wonder how are your experiences with different DivX format played on S60 phones? Please share it here.
